History

  • For over 100 years students have attended one of many Catholic schools in Kalamazoo.
  • During the last 25 years demographics of the City of Kalamazoo and the Greater Kalamazoo area have changed. Today significantly more people live in urban areas on the outskirts of the city and in out-county areas beyond the city.
  • Bishop Murray established a Blue Ribbon Committee in 2001 to review the status of the four Catholic elementary schools and Hackett Catholic Central High School and to recommend improvements.
  • The Blue Ribbon Committee made a number of recommendations for change which the Bishop and the Pastors of Greater Kalamazoo took under advisement.
  • In 2002 the Pastors of Greater Kalamazoo agreed to initiate unification of the schools by hiring an Executive Director and forming an advisory Board for Catholic Schools of Greater Kalamazoo.
  • In March 2006, Bishop James A. Murray formally authorized formation of the Catholic Schools of Greater Kalamazoo Board to provide advice and counsel. The Board consists of all pastors of participating parishes, lay members of the earlier Board whose terms have not expired, and one representative from each of the school's Local Advisory Councils.
