Unification Efforts
In order to continue to provide the Kalamazoo area community with a Catholic faith-based education alternative and to create a financially sustainable, unified elementary and secondary school system for each ensuing academic year, the initial CSGK Board under the guidance and support of area pastors and the Bishop initiated a unification process to bring together St. Augustine Cathedral School, St. Joseph Elementary School, St. Mary Elementary School, St. Monica Elementary School and Hackett Central High School into one system, the Catholic Schools of Greater Kalamazoo (CSGK). In an initial step St. Mary students for the year 2004-2005 were absorbed into the three remaining elementary schools. In a second step, Bishop James A. Murray and the Pastors of Greater Kalamazoo decided that St. Joseph students for the year 2005-2006 would be absorbed into St. Monica and St. Augustine Schools. The unification process now continues. Bishop James A. Murray has formally created and recognized Catholic Schools of Greater Kalamazoo as a nonprofit corporation. The corporation consists of St. Augustine Cathedral School, St. Monica School and Hackett Catholic Central High School, which shall be operated as separate divisions. The Bishop has appointed a Board of Directors to make policy decisions subject to his review and approval. Members of the CSGK Board include the pastors of those parishes which provide direct financial subsidies to the corporation, one representative of each of the Local Advisory Councils to be appointed by the principal, and other individuals as shall be determined and selected by the Board of Directors.

Each school shall be administered by a principal who is appointed by the Board subject to approval of the Bishop. Each school will establish a Local Advisory Council of up to seven members, to advise the principal on educational programs, policies and activities for that school, promote student recruiting, build school community relations, assist with fundraising, and offer input for the school principal's performance evaluation. Members of Local Advisory Councils shall be nominated by the principal, approved by the Board and elected by vote of the parents and guardians of students attending the school.

The new board will initially focus on creating an appropriate CSGK administrative structure. The board's focus is then expected to broaden into initiatives to update the CSGK strategic plan and to ensure necessary funding for Catholic school programs and facilities.
